Sinan Paşa Han (Caravanserai)
The Sinan Paşa Han is an Ottoman-era building located in the district of Kargı, to the north of Çorum. The han was built in 1506-1507 by Sinan Paşa, vizier of Sultan Bayezid II, as part of a single complex that also included a mosque, a sıbyan mektebi (primary school) and a bathhouse. In this respect the structure is not a stand-alone han, but part of a building complex created by the same patron, bringing together several different functions.
History
The early 16th century, when the building was constructed, corresponds to the reign of Sultan Bayezid II of the Ottoman state. During this period it was a widespread practice for statesmen to endow, in their own name, structures such as a mosque, a school, a bathhouse and a han together. This served both to meet religious and educational needs and to sustain the endowment (vakıf) through the income generated by these buildings. Within this understanding, the han too must have been designed with a function that brought income to the complex and offered lodging to travelers passing along the road.
Architecture
Situated alongside the southern wall of the Sinan Paşa Mosque, the han is a single-chamber structure. Its walls were built in alternating courses of rubble stone, cut stone and brick; this combination of materials is a technique frequently seen in the Anatolian building tradition of the period. The structure is covered with barrel vaults. During the earthquake that struck the region in 1943, the front face of the han collapsed entirely, so that the building largely lost its original façade.
Location and Related Places
Since the han stands in the same surroundings as the other elements of the building complex to which it belongs, it is a structure that should be considered within the whole of the Sinan Paşa Complex (Külliye). The Sinan Paşa Primary School (Taş Mektep / Stone School), also built by the same patron, is likewise part of this complex.
