Kışlacık Pırasası
Kışlacık Pırasası is a regional leek variety with geographical indication status, grown with a long-standing tradition in the village of Kışlacık in Çorum’s Mecitözü district.
Geographical Indication Registration
Following an application by the Mecitözü District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) registered “Kışlacık Pırasası” as a mark of origin on 10 October 2024 under registration number 1648 (application file no. C2022/000123, filed 7 April 2022; TÜRKPATENT Geographical Indications Portal). With this registration, Kışlacık Pırasası became Mecitözü district’s first geographical-indication product.
Characteristics
According to Cengiz Nayman, acting district governor of Mecitözü, what sets Kışlacık leeks apart from others is their pronounced aroma, their soft white stalk, their curved shape — a result of being grown mounded in soil — and their high content of protein, calcium, iron, magnesium and sodium (Anadolu Agency, 16.10.2024).
Cultivation and Its Place in the Local Economy
Leek cultivation in the village of Kışlacık has deep roots, which is why the Mecitözü District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry pursued the registration. Oversight and protection of the registered product are coordinated by the Çorum Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry. Kışlacık Pırasası is described as one of the vegetables holding an important place in the province’s and district’s economy and culinary culture, with celebrations held in the village during the harvest season.
